Confused? Here are a few things you should know: -The date: Sixteen hundreds, by Overland standards. -The place: The Underland, a massive network of caverns found miles below the place that will one day be called New York City. -The population: Underlanders, the humans who moved there following their prophet, the newly deceased Bartholomew of Sandwich. Gnawers, the giant rats with an intense, mutual hatred towards the Underlanders. Fliers, the giant bats allied to the humans. Nibblers, the giant mice, who are constantly oppressed by the Underland’s larger rodentia, the Gnawers. Crawlers, the giant roaches who typically prefer to flee rather than fight. Spinners, the giant spiders that produce much of the materials used for fabric. Shiners, the gluttonous giant fireflies too lazy to do much of anything. -The prophecies: Carved into the walls, floor, and ceiling of the dedicated Prophecy Room by Sandwich, the prophecies foretell hundreds of years worth of events in the Underland’s future. The humans have already begun squabbling over the meanings, climbing over one another’s heads in attempts to fulfill them. One series of prophecies is more coveted than the rest: the role of the Warrior is more sought-after than any other found on the walls.
